 The
White House located at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, is the nation's most
famous address and home to every president of the United States since
John Adams, was originally constructed 1792-1800. Designed by
James Hoban, it is significant for its Federal architecture. It
was reconstructed in 1815 after being burned by British soldiers
during the War of 1812. The exterior of the main structure, remains
much as it was in 1800 with the exception of some additions and minor
changes. During the Truman administration the interior was completely
renovated using the historic floor plan.
Open:
Public tours Tuesday through Saturday beginning at 10:00 a.m. You may
pick up tickets at the White House Visitors Center located on E Street
between 14th and 15th. Tickets are issued on the day of the tour only,
on a first come first serve basis starting at 7:30 a.m. White House
tickets are available on a limited supply through congressional offices.
Constituents interested in touring the White House should place a
request 6-8 weeks before their visit, earlier notification is advisable
for those wanting a tour during the summer.
