Running 184.5 miles along the Potomac River between Washington, D.C. and Cumberland, Maryland, the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park preserves the remnants of America's colorful canal era when products gently down the canal to market. The canal linked the rapidly growing west to the east playing an important role in the growth and development of our country  Mule-drawn boat trips available (April-Oct.). Wide towpaths open to bikers, joggers and hikers. The main entrance, visitor center and coach parking at Great Falls (MD). Admission: $5 per car. Visitor Center Open 9:30 am to 4:30 pm.
